Yet he may not be known to you as he rarely speaks locally. This blog entry is let you know that we have a well respected holistic medical doctor practicing East of the River and also to introduce you to a new favorite practice of his - Earthing.
Dr. Sinatra calls it “the most important health breakthrough in my 30-plus years as a doctor,” yet its practiced by most children and comes naturally to many of us who love the outdoors or gardening. Earthing is just a new term for grounding, as in walking outdoors barefoot and reconnecting to the Earth. Most of us interested in holistic medicine and the environment already know the benefits of connecting to the Earth - physically, energetically and spiritually. So what’s new about Earthing? What’s new is that there is now medical research and a physiological explanation for the benefits we have always known about intuitively and from our experience.
The Earth’s surface brims with subtle electrical energy; a limitless number of free electrons that are continually replenished through solar radiation and lightening strikes. Our bodies naturally absorb these particles when we make physical contact with the ground. In the body, these electrons have an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing the free-radical activity that causes inflammation and chronic pain. It also keeps the body’s innate electrical circuitry properly balanced.
Inflammation is increasingly being identified as the cause of many chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. The way we live today also places many barriers, including the type of footwear we use, between us and the ground’s healing energy.
Dr. Sinatra is the co-author of a new book called “Earthing” that provides a lot of detail on how grounding affects the body and how it can help prevent or alleviate many conditions. To date there have been over a dozen completed studies showing the significant positive effects of Earthing on physiology. Besides those you might expect such as improved sleep, increased energy, lower stress levels and faster healing is the positive protection to the body against EMFs.
Dr. Sinatra recommends 40 minutes a day and feels that grass, sand, dirt and concrete are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw electrons. Wood and vinyl are not conductive. Walking or just sitting with your feet on the ground works too.
Of course at this time of year its difficult, if not impossible, to get your feet in touch with the ground without getting frostbite. For this reason products are being developed that can be used while you sleep, sit or work. You can be sufficiently connected to the Earth through a grounding wire and plug that fits into a standard three-pronged electrical outlet. Information and products can be found at Barefoot Health, Inc. The Biomat™ you’ve seen advertised by practitioners does the same type of grounding among its other benefits.
So don’t be surprised if one night when you call your doctor she says, “Walk two miles barefoot and call me in the morning.”
