Way back in 1984 I was an engineer at Pratt, very left-brained and quite conservative. But for eight years I had been reading books on metaphysics and spirituality, experimenting with the ideas that I found and in the process becoming much more comfortable with myself, much less introverted, developing a spiritual connection and enjoying life a whole lot more.
My life changed for the better and as happens with so many who find themselves on this path, I wanted to help others discover there were alternatives that would benefit them and help them to a better life too. But where could I contribute?
Friends were becoming healers, psychic readers and teachers as they found ways to get involved and give back. I tried these things, but didn’t have talent in these areas and they didn’t really call to me. It wasn’t until I offered to help put on an event that I found my place, my talent and my passion. I found that the skills used in my day-job were in demand in the spiritual and holistic communities as well - planning, organizing, making lists, taking notes, analyzing trends and keeping track of finances. The healers, teachers and psychics were often too right brained and we lefties could help them organize and get more done, more effectively. In my case it resulted in putting out a magazine and working on the boards of many organizations.
This work has been satisfying partly because I know I’m helping to make a difference, but also because I have made so many new and interesting friends, heard so many fascinating stories and found so much love. One thing that often happens when you start down a spiritual path is that your ideas and values shift and your old friends begin to drop away. You no longer have the same things in common and it is important to find a new support group that shares your interests and understands what you are thinking and experiencing.
Getting involved in the community is one way to do this, particular if you are retired and have the extra time. You don’t have to become a holistic practitioner to become a healer and you don’t have to be an expert in metaphysics to become a teacher. You’ll find there is a place for you and the talents and life experience you bring with you. Many find satisfaction working with a church group where there is a need for many hands and many talents.
There are great opportunities if you are retired and would like to make a difference. The compensation doesn’t come in dollars, but in things that money can’t buy. You can continue using the skills you have developed over a lifetime while meeting new people, finding a new place in the community and you will find you continue to grow as you help others.
We hope to use Conscious CT to build the spiritual community. We have big dreams but need help in realizing them. Over the summer we will begin the next phase of Conscious CT which will include an educational component. We’ll need writers, planners and organizers and who knows what else. There are also opportunities at a number of centers in the area. If you would like to start a new adventure in your life send me an email and let me know your interests. Hopefully you’ll find it as rewarding as I have.
Ah. Just one reason (multi-faceted though it may be) why I love and honor you so,
What a fine teacher, healer, mirror you are my friend, that you reflect so well the high value of playing our strengths and leveraging our abilities - in the arenas of our choice.
Ashe,
